This type of dendritic Kokopu Nephrite is of a very rare variety, it has only been found to date in the Aniseed Valley Richmond Tasman area. Although only been documented by prominent geologists Russel Beck in the 70’s there have been numerous Māori artifacts found manufactured in this stone. A large majority of which has been classed as South Westland jade.
The commissioned piece was made for a father to Son. The manaia is a guardian representing balance and protection.
