Rare Aotea stone from South Westland, South Island, a blend of Fushite and Kyanite found only in one place in the world Makaawhio Awa/Jacobs River. Aotea has an unusual aquamarine colour which is why it is so attractive to the eye. It is relatively soft to carve compared to jade though it’s crystalline structure still makes it strong enough to be worked for jewelry purposes. This stone is also recognized as one of the stones imbued with the life force of Te Poutini. A legendary Taniwha (monster/guardian) who abducted Waitaiki a beautiful woman from the North Island who he turned to stone and gave his life force.
