Description
Flower Jade or Picture Jade is probably one of the most beautiful in the New Zealand Jade family. It is so named because of the wonderful effects produced by the oxidization process of the nephrite, add to this the complete felting of the jade fibers to give a very clear and translucent material, the final result a raging ocean, mountainous terrain, deep forest or a bonsai garden are some of the terms people have given to describe Flower Jade. In a pre-European era a Mere of this caliber would most likely be owned by an individual or family of high status, perhaps a Chief or Chieftess , decorated warrior or maybe a Tohunga (spiritual adviser). This particular shape has been modeled around a Southern Moriori style. Moriori ancestry and tikanga (culture, custom, ethic, etiquette, fashion, formality, lore, manner, meaning, protocol, style and customary law) has fascinated Leon the carver since childhood. This Flower Jade Mere is today’s Toanga (treasure) and tomorrow’s artifact.
