Description
Ngi Tahu gifted the greenstone to a Ko Matua from Ngati Kuia which in turn was gifted to the carver. The progression of how many hands the pounamu has gone through creates a stone with strong wairua or presence and this can span centuries so sometimes the origins of the stone can be lost to time.
This flower jade, as it’s called is from the Arahura region. This stone’s quality is of the highest appreciation by Māori and many other cultures likewise because of its transparency and lucidness. The emerald green makes it also very appealing to European buyers. It is one of the rarest and most highly prized jade types found in New Zealand.
