Tangiwai is the one of the most ancient forms of pounamu and there are sad stories of the origin of Tangiwai Pounamu. In one of them – Waitaiki was stolen from her husband Tanaahua by a taniwha (supernatural being) named Poutini. Waitaiki weeps onto the rocks and her tears form Tangiwai, the tear-water stone.
